World Conference on Pharmacometrics 2020 :: Register Today!

On behalf of the organizing committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 3rd edition of the World Conference on Pharmacometrics (WCoP) to be held at the southern tip of the continent of Africa on 6-9 April 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Important: Conference registrations, abstract submissions and limited travel bursaries are still available at the WCoP website! Visit this link to find more information.

The success of the inaugural conference in Seoul, South Korea in 2012 and the second conference in Brisbane, Australia in 2016 has been a source of motivation for the Executive Committee to continue with the series of WCoP Conferences in locations that expand the global reach of our science beyond Europe and the US.

Africa accounts for 15% of the global population and 25% of the global disease burden: yet only produces about 2% of the world’s research output and holds only 0.1% of the world’s patents. Research and development pipelines for the diseases that disproportionately affect African countries are grossly inadequate. Furthermore, clinical pharmacology studies that underpin drug label claims for efficacy and safety are rarely studied in Africa. Such assessments are important to understand dosing requirements in communities that might have different intrinsic (e.g. genetics, physiology, comorbidity) and extrinsic (local medical practice, diet) factors compared to patients in the more developed economies where these studies are usually conducted.

While some view this as a challenge, we see this as an opportunity to attract more collaborations to Africa. Over several years, a core group of individuals and institutions have been championing the science of pharmacometrics in Africa via targeted capacity development efforts and contributions to dosing guidelines based on our science. We have now significantly ramped up these efforts in preparation for WCoP 2020 and look forward to engaging with you during the conference.

South Africa, the “cradle of humankind”, is home to a diversity of people and cultures, and breathtaking landscapes, animal and plant life. Cape Town, Africa’s “Mother City”, has been hosting high-profile international conferences for a long time. It is renowned for its dramatic mountain vistas and ocean views and its warm-hearted people, but also for being home to scientific centres of excellence, including two world-class academic teaching hospitals and biomedical research institutions.

We look forward to welcoming you to Cape Town and thank you in advance for your participation and support.

Paolo Denti and Colin Pillai on behalf of the WCoP 2020 Local Organising Committee and the WCoP Executive Committee
