Lesson One:

Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics

Overview:

In this lesson, you will learn about the role of clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics within clinical drug development. We will start by reviewing the phases of clinical drug development and then describe some aspects of clinical trials focussing on clinical pharmacology studies. This will lay the foundation for future lessons on how to explore and analyse clinical pharmacology data using model-based methodologies.

Learning objectives

  • Outline the drug discovery and clinical development process

  • Understand selected topics in clinical trial design and execution with a focus on clinical pharmacology studies

  • Determine the role played by pharmacometrics within drug development and pharmacotherapy

Objective 1: Outline the drug discovery and clinical development process

1.1 Watch any ONE or ALL of the following presentations :

These videos describe the drug discovery and clinical drug development process and have been produced by the pharmaceutical industry to describe the complex and long process of bringing medicines to patients. There are several other useful resources available on the internet describing these concepts.

Objective 2: Understand selected topics in clinical trial design and execution with a focus on clinical pharmacology studies

2.1 Watch any ONE or ALL of the following lay-person video presentations on the internet that will provide an Introduction to Clinical Trials.

Objective 3: Determine the role played by pharmacometrics within drug development and pharmacotherapy

3.1 Study the following presentations:
